Resurrection: Great Commission

Resurrection: Great Commission

Resurrection: Great Commission

A Sermon by Dr. Bob Griffin, Teaching Elder at Sovereign Grace Church

The great commission occurs FIVE TIMES in Scripture: in all four of the Gospels and the Book of Acts. Its repetition is significant. Of course EVERYTHING God says is significant, but something repeated 5 times shows special importance.  Each of the writers is presenting this mandate of God from a different perspective, with a different purpose:
Matthew = show authority (work on Jesus’ behalf)
Mark = show results (believe and be saved; don’t and be damned)
Luke = show fulfillment of prophecy
John = show reason (our commission based on Jesus’ commission)
Acts (Luke) = show program for world evangelism

I.       PREMISE

A.       INDECISION
1.       OBEDIENCE
Mt 28:16 The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them.

( also Acts 20:28 “feed the flock”; Titus 2:14 “who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works”; Hebrews 10:25 “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near”; James 4:17 “whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin”)

III.     PROMISE

And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?)
