Philippians 2:9-11 “Above Every Name”

Philippians 2:9-11 “Above Every Name”

Philippians: Above Every Name

A Sermon by Dr. Bob Griffin, Teaching Elder at Sovereign Grace Church

I.       THE NAME OF CHRIST HONORED IN THE PAST
Philippians 2:9a “For this reason God also has highly exalted Him”
Lessons from the Exalted POSITION of Christ:

A.       AFTER THE CROSS, JESUS DESERVED THE GLORY/EXHALTATION

1.       He IS the God of the Universe (also Col 1:13-19; John 1:1ff; I Peter 5:6)
2.       Men DO NOT WANT TO HEAR IT (also           Isaiah 40:28-31)
3.       Man wants the GLORY FOR HIMSELF (also Romans 1:20-25)
4.       Man wants to AVOID THE CONSEQUENCE (also II Pet 3:3ff)

B.       AFTER THE CROSS, JESUS RECEIVED THE GLORY/EXHALTATION
1.       Based on His WORK (also Rom 6:4; Is 52:13)
2.       NEW Honor and Position

II.      THE NAME OF CHRIST HONORED IN THE PRESENT
Philippians 2:9b “. . . and granted Him a name that is above every name,”
Lessons from the Exalted PERSON of Christ:

A.       TODAY, JESUS IS WORTHY OF ADORATION AND PRAISE
1.       Present Tense – for Believers Today
2.       His name alone IS Worthy

B.       TODAY, JESUS HAS A NEW NAME IN GLORY
1.       God often changed Names (also Rev 2:17; 3:12)
2.       Jesus the Christ IS LORD
3.       Great I AM
4.       How Can Man Miss This??  They MUST BE BLIND . . .

III.     THE NAME OF CHRIST HONORED IN THE FUTURE
Philippians 2:10-11 “. . that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow – heavenly, earthly, underground; so that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord’, to the glory of God the Father.”
Lessons from the Exalted PREEMINENCE of Christ:

A.       SOMEDAY SOON, EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW
1.       Bowing Knee is a Significant Admission
2.       Demonstration of Authority (also Is 45:23)
3.       It will be ETERNALLY TOO LATE then

B.       SOMEDAY SOON, EVERY TONGUE WILL CONFESS
1.       God demands HIS GLORY and will not give it to Another
2.       Purpose of Confession = Glory of God
3.       WHAT WILL MAN CONFESS? (also Rev 5:11-14; 7:9-12; 14:6-7; 19:6)

C.       TO THE GLORY OF GOD THE FATHER ALONE!
1.       Glory of God (also I Cor 3:11-15; Rev 19:11-21; Rev 20:7-15)
2        Philippians 2:5-11 is NOT for the theological education of the Philippians
3        Choice? BOW/CONFESS IT NOW
