I. RESPONSE OF CONVERSION
A. CONSECRATION OF THE HEART
>1. ACKNOWLEDGING THE GOD WHO HEALS
II Kg 5:15 Then he returned to the man of God and all his entourage stood before him. He said, “Behold, I know that there is no God in all the earth but in Israel; now accept a blessing from your servant.”
(also Rom 15:4; Lk 17:12-19)
>2. REJECTING SALVATION BY WORKS
II Kg 5:16 But he said, “As the LORD lives, before whom I stand, I will receive none.” Naaman urged him to take it, but he refused.
(also Gal 6:6; Rev 21:6; Rom 4:6; Tit 3:4)
B. CONVICTION IN WORSHIP
>1. HOLY GROUND
II Kg 5:17 Then Naaman said, “If not, please let there be given to your servant two mule loads of earth, for from now on your servant will not offer burnt offering or sacrifice to any god but YHWH.
>2. REQUEST FOR UNDERSTANDING
II Kg 5:18 In this matter may YHWH pardon your servant: when my master goes into the house of Rimmon to worship there, leaning on my arm, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, when I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, YHWH pardon your servant in this matter.”
(also II Kg 7:2, 17)
>3. BENEDICTION OF FAITH
II Kg 5:19 Elisha said to him, “Go in peace.”
(also Jn 17:15-17)
II. REACTION OF COVETOUSNESS
A. CONDUCT OF SELF-SERVICE
>1. RATIONALIZATION
II Kg 5:19b-20a But when Naaman had gone only a short distance, Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, thought, “See, my master has spared Naaman this Syrian, by not accepting from him what he owes.
(also Mk 6:52)
>2. EVIL ACTION
II Kg 5:20b As the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something from him.”
(also Mt 6:21)
B. CONSTRUE A LIE
>1. LYING WORDS
II Kg 5:21-22a So Gehazi followed Naaman. And when Naaman saw someone running after him, he got down from the chariot to meet him and said, “Is all well?” And he said, “All is well.”
(also Jas 1:14-15)
>2. SITUATION ETHICS
II Kg 5:22b “My master has sent me to say, ‘There have just now come to me from the hill country of Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets. Please give them a talent of silver and two changes of clothing.'”
(also Col 5:5; Eph 5:5)
C. COMPILE WEALTH
>1. GENEROUS REWARD
II Kg 5:23 And Naaman said, “Please accept two talents.” And he urged him and tied up two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of clothing, and laid them on two of his servants. And they carried them before Gehazi.
(also Mt 6:24; Lk 12:15)
>2. HIDING SIN
II Kg 5:24 And when he came to the hill, he took them from their hand and put them in the house, and he sent the men away, and they departed.
III. RESULT OF CONDEMNATION
A. CONFRONTATION WITH AUTHORITY
>1. OPPORTUNITY TO COME CLEAN
II Kg 5:25 He went in and stood before his master, and Elisha said to him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?” And he said, “Your servant didn’t go anywhere.”
(also Prov 28:13-14; Eph 4:30; I Thes 5:19; Heb 3:7-13)
>2. SECRET SIN
II Kg 5:26 But he said to him, “Didn’t my heart see when the man turned from his chariot to meet you? Was it a time to accept money and garments, olive orchards and vineyards, sheep and oxen, male and female servants?
B. CONSEQUENCES OF SIN
>1. WAGES OF SIN
II Kg 5:27a Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and to your descendants forever.”
>2. TRAGEDY
II Kg 5:27b So he went out from his presence a leper, like snow.
(also II Kgs 8:4-5; I Cor 10:6, 11-12)
