I. PREPARING FOR VICTORY
A. GREEDY ENEMY
>>1. IDENTIFYING THE ENEMY
Ex 17:8a Then Amalek came (Heb 11:27; 12:16-17; Gen 14:7; 25:34; Num 13:29)
>>2 SNEAK ATTACK
Ex 17:8b and attacked Israel at Rephidim. (Deut 25:17-18)
B. GUTS TO RESPOND
>>1. PHYSICAL BATTLE
Ex 17:9a, 10a So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. So, Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek. (Ex 13:17)
>>2. SPIRITUAL BATTLE
Ex 17:9b, 10b Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand . . . while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
II. SEEING GOD WORK
A. GAIN OR LOSS
>>1. EBB & FLOW
Ex 17:11 Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. (Ex 2:11-15)
>>2. SUPPORT
Ex 17:12a But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. (Col 4:2, 12)
B. GROUNDED ON THE ROCK
>>1. CONSISTENCY
Ex 17:12b So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
>>2. VICTORY
Ex 17:13 And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword. (I Sam 17:46-47)
III. RECORDING GOD’S ANSWER
A. GLORIFYING GOD
>>1. MEMORIAL
Ex 17:14a Then YHWH said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and repeat it in the ears of Joshua” (Ex 17:14; 24:4-7; 34:27-28; Num 33:1-2; Deut 31:9,24)
>>2. CONDEMNATION
Ex 17:14b I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. (Ex 4:22, 23)
B. GRATEFUL HEARTS
>>1. ALTAR
Ex 17:15 And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, YHWH-Nissi, the LORD Is My Banner.
(Ps 60:4; Is 11:10)
>>2. PROMISE
Ex 17:16 For He said, “I swear that I, YHWH, will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”
