A Sermon by Dr. Bob Griffin, Teaching Elder at Sovereign Grace Church
Review: James 1:21-22
Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
1. Before the Church Service – Put away the world . . .
2. During the Church Service – Receive the Word . . .
3. After the Church Service – Do the Word . . .
Focus this message on verse 22, “Be doers of the Word”
I. WHAT IS A “DOER” OF THE WORD?
A. ESSENTIALS of a “Doer”
Scriptures interwoven: Josh 1:7-8; Psalm 119:166; Ezek. 11:19-20; Mt 7:21-24; Jn 4:32-34; 12:50; 15:10
B. EXTENT of a “Doer”
First, in sharing the Gospel with others
Then, integrated into all of life. No distinction of sacred and secular. Let the Word penetrate all of life.
II. HOW DO I BECOME A “DOER” OF THE WORD?
A. Make “Doing” PERSONAL
Rom 12:1-2
Christ is the ultimate objective of life, not myself
B. Keep “Doing” PRAYERFUL
Ps 119:5
Ask self what can we do? Where is the power to do the work?
C. Own “Doing” as PURPOSEFUL
Eph 2:10
Works don’t save, but they demonstrate salvation and are important
D. Discover “Doing” as PRAISEFUL
Ps 119:6-7
Goal of many is to find satisfaction in life. Just do it.
