Philippians: Lights in a Darkened World
A Sermon by Dr. Bob Griffin, Teaching Elder at Sovereign Grace Church
B. WITHOUT ARGUING
Philippians 2:14b “and [without] arguing”
(also I Cor 10:10, Numbers 12, 14, 18, 21)
C. WITHOUT BLAME
Philippians 2:15a “in order that you might become blameless”
D. WITHOUT HARM
Philippians 2:15b “and innocent”
E. WITHOUT FAULT [REBUKE]
Philippians 2:15c “children of God without fault”
So, how should we then live? Put positively, we must be: Grateful, Submissive, Above reproach, Peace–loving and Consistent
Not too hard for me. Right. Oh, wait. God is not done . .
II. POSITIVE CHARACTER TRAITS TO AVOW
A. GOD’S CHILD IN A PERVERTED WORLD
Philippians 2:15c “children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation”
(also Deut 32:1-5; Acts 20:29-30)
B. GOD’S LIGHT IN THE UNIVERSE
Philippians 2:15d “among whom you appear [shine] like stars in this world”
(also Dan 12:3; Eph 5:8; Mt 5:16; Jn 1:9; 3:19; 8:12)
C. GOD’S WORD–BEARER

D. GOD’S CAUSE FOR REJOICING
Philippians 2:16b “so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ”
(also II Cor 1:14; I Thes 2:19-20)
E. GOD’S PERFECT WORK
Philippians 2:16c “that I have not run in vain or worked hard in vain.”
(also Gal 2:2; I Thes 3:5)
From the negatives of what to avoid, we learn we must be
Grateful
Submissive
Above reproach
Peace-loving
Consistent
From the positives of how to live, we learn we must be
Child of God
Evangelist
Messenger
Joyful
Complete
Now we know and understand the truth. How should we then live?
