I. LOOKING AHEAD – JESUS
A. CONCLUSION
Mt 26:1 When Jesus had finished all these sayings, He said to His disciples,
1. SECOND ADVENT
2. STAGE IS SET
B. CROSS
Mt 26:2 “You know that after two days comes Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”
1. STATEMENT OF FACT
2. SUFFERING SAVIOR
II. LOOKING AROUND – PRIESTS
A. CONCLAVE
Mt 26:3-4 Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people gathered in the courtyard of Caiaphas, the high priest, and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill Him.
1. SOCIETY
2. STEALTH
[Psalm 31:13 For I am the slander of many; fear is on every side; while they take counsel together against me, they scheme to take away my life]
B. CONCERN
Mt 26:5 But they said, “Not during Passover, lest there be an uproar among the people.”
1. SOON
2. SOVEREIGN
[John 12:10-11 So the chief priests plotted to kill Eleazar as well, for on account of him many of the Jews were leaving and believing in Jesus]
III. LOOKING DOWN – MARY
A. CONSECRATION
Mt 26:6-7 Now when Jesus had been in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman approached Him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on His head as He reclined.
1. SINCERE WORSHIP
2. SCENE
B. CONFRONTATION
Mt 26:8-9 And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? This could have been sold for much money and given to the poor.”
1. SERVICE
2. SECRET SIN
[John 12:6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag controlled what was in it.]
C. COMENDATION
Mt 26:10-13 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you cause trouble for the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to Me. For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have Me. In pouring this ointment on My body, she has done it to prepare Me for burial. Truly, I say to you, wherever the Good News is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in her memory.”
1. STRESS
