Lessons: Preparation

A Sermon by Dr. Bob Griffin, Teaching Elder at Sovereign Grace Church (very slow to upload; please be patient)

I.        LET JESUS CONTROL OUR MEANS
A.       DAILY NEEDS
1.       PASCHAL LAMB
Lk 22:7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.
2.       PROCLAMATION
Lk 22:8 So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.”

B.       DETAILED RESPONSE
1.       PRESCRIPTION
Mt 26:17-18 “Where do You want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?” He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is near. My disciples and I will keep the Passover at your house.'”
Lk 22:10-12 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters and tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ And he will show you a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.”
2.       PROVISION
Luke 22:13a And they went and found it just as he had told them

C.       DUTY FULFILLED
1.       PREPARATION
Mt 26:19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and prepared the Passover.
2.       PRESENCE
Mt 26:20 When it was evening, he reclined [there] with the Twelve.

II.       LET JESUS CONTROL OUR MOTIVES
A.       DESIRE OF JESUS
1.       PROSPECT
Lk 22:15-16 And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
2.       PRIZE
Lk 22:28-30 “You are those who have stayed with Me through my trials, and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to Me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

B.       DISPUTE OF DISCIPLES
1.       PREEMINENCE
Lk 22:24 A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.
2.       PRINCIPLE
Lk 22:25-27 And He said to them, “Kings exercise lordship over the nations, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. Not so with you. Rather, let the greater among you become as the younger, and the leader as the servant. For who is greater: one who reclines or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines? But I am among you as one who serves.

III.      LET JESUS CONTROL OUR MINISTRY
A.       DEMONSTRATION
1.       PRESENTATION
Jn 13:3-4 Jesus . . rose from supper. He laid aside His outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around His waist.
2.       PURIFICATION
Jn 13:5 He then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around Him.

B.       DECISION
1.       PROTEST
Jn 13:6-8 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do You wash my feet?”
Jesus answered, “What I’m doing you do not understand now, but later you’ll understand.”
Peter said to him, “No way will you ever wash my feet.”
2.       PROPOSAL
Jn 13:9 Jesus answered him, “Unless I wash you, you have no share with Me.”
Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!”

C.       DECLARATION
1.       PATTERN
Jn 13:14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
2.       PARADIGM
Jn 13:15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you
Jn 13:16-17 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them
