I. JUDAS: HEART OF THE BETRAYER
A. REJECTING JESUS
Mt 26:21 During the meal He said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.”
Jn 13:22 The disciples looked at one another, perplexed at what He meant.
Mt 26:22 And they were very distressed and began to ask Him one after another, “Am I the one, Lord?”
1. UNBELIEVABLE
also Jn 13:21 “Jesus was troubled in His spirit”
2. UNCERTAINTY
B. REPLACING JESUS
Mt 26:23-24 He responded, “One who is dipping his hand in the bowl with Me will betray Me. Truly the Son of Man is led away as was written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is delivered up; it would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”
1. UNFAITHFUL
also John 13:18 “He who eats My bread has lifted up his heel against Me”
also Psalm 41:9 “Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.”
2. UNYIELDING
also Jn 13:23-24 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus’ side, so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom He was speaking.
also Jn 13:25-26 So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, He gave to Judas, the son of Simon of Kerioth.
also Jn 13:27 Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you do, do more quickly.”
C. MOCKING JESUS
Mt 26:25Judas (who would betray Him) answered, “Not I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said.”
1. UMBRAGE
2. ULTIMATE COVER
also Jn 13:28-30 Now none reclining knew why He said this to him; some thought that, because Judas had the purse, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the holiday,” or that he should give something to the poor. So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was dark.
also John 10:18 “I lay down my life on my own initiative.”
also I Sam 16:7 “For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”
II. PETER: HEART OF THE BOASTER
A. ABANDONING JESUS
Mt 26:31-32 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all abandon Me tonight. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ But after I am raised up, I will precede you to Galilee.”
Mt 26:33 Peter answered him, “Even if all reject You, I will never abandon You.”
1. UNEASY
2. UNDERSTANDING
also His eyes were set on the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:2).
3. UNWARY
also Jeremiah 17:6 “the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked”
B. FAILING JESUS
Jn 13:36-37 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you will follow afterward.” Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for You.”
1. UPSET
also Jn 13:31-32 When [Judas] left, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him. If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him at once.
also Jn 13:33-34 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’
2. URGENCY
C. DISOWNING JESUS
Mt 26:34 Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, during tonight, before the rooster crows, you will disown Me three times.”
Mt 26:35 Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with You, I would not disown you!” And all the disciples said the same.
